Faculty of Vocational & Distance Education

Faculty of Vocational & Distance Education

Vision

To be the global benchmark for transformative vocational and distance education, empowering learners through innovation and research.

Mission

To deliver accessible, quality education and training that equips clients with skills for lifelong success and societal impact.

The Faculty of Vocational and Distance Education (FVDE) was established in September 2009 following the elevation of the former Directorate of Vocational and Distance Education (DVDE) to full faculty status. This transformation underscored Makerere University Business School’s (MUBS) commitment to expanding accessible, skills-based education across Uganda.

Core Functions

FVDE plays a pivotal role in:

  • Academic Oversight: Managing all Diploma and Certificate programmes at MUBS.
  • Regional Campus Coordination: Supervising academic activities at Arua and Mbale Campuses. Recently, Arua Campuses has been upgraded to a faculty.
  • Affiliate Partnerships: Providing quality assurance for private institutions affiliated with MUBS.
  • Department of Education: Housing and coordinating postgraduate diplomas in Education.

Key Initiatives

  • BCOM Plus One Programme
  • The programme to impart real-life vocational skills such as fish farming, hairdressing, driving, among others to students enrolled on all MUBS academic programmes, through apprenticeship arrangements with industry players.
  • Luzira Prisons Study Programme
    • A Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative launched in 2009/2010.
    • Offers vocational training and certifications to inmates at Luzira Upper Prison, aiding their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
  • Industry-Aligned Programmes
    • FVDE designs curricula to meet labour market demands, with diplomas in fields like Business Computing, Hospitality, and Data Analytics.
  • Research & Collaboration
    • Collaborates with the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAM, formerly UBTEB) in offering national certificate courses.
    • Collaborates with the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) in offering vocational courses.
    • Active member of the Commonwealth of African Polytechnics Association (CAPA).
    • Faculty members publish cutting-edge research in vocational education, ICT, and pedagogy (see Research & Publications).

Objectives

  • To provide practical, transformative education that bridges theory and practice.
  • To expand access to quality training through distance learning and regional campuses.
  • To foster innovation and social impact through initiatives like the Luzira Programme.

Why Choose FVDE?

  • Flexible Learning: Blend of vocational, distance, and on-campus programmes.
  • Industry Connections: Strong partnerships with employers and polytechnics.
  • Social Impact: Education as a tool for empowerment and community development.
