Bachelor of Business Computing

INTRODUCTION

This Programme was approved by Senate in 2002 as a stand-alone degree programme. The Programme was reviewed because of Employer demand in the skills that are expected of a Graduate of Bachelor of Business Computing and benchmarking from other Universities offering similar programmes.

1.1           Background

The program was previously being offered as Bachelor of Business Computing approved by Senate in 2002 as stand-alone degree program.  The program was split from the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program which was one of the options in the BBA program.  The BBC program was last reviewed in 2007 and currently it is being submitted as Bachelor of Business Computing (BBC) in the current review. The program was previously running as both Day and Evening.  In the current review, the program runs on both sessions of Day and Evening.

For the last ten years, the business computing programme has not been reviewed and yet a lot of changes have taken place in the technology industry where this programme is grounded. These notable changes include but not limited to cloud computing, green computing, social media, cloud sourcing, big data and analytics. These new technologies have drastically changed the way businesses operate thus dire need to tailor the content to the current needs of the industry.

1.2       Programme Objectives

The general objective of this programme is;

  • To empower students with competences, knowledge and abilities to use ICT tosolve business challenges
  • To strike a balance between theory and real-world practice in computing such that graduates of the programme can create the best computing solutions to solve business needs in the industry
1.3       Programme Specific Objectives

The specific objectives of the programme are to:

  • Evaluate business processes, design and develop software solutions to address complex business problems and opportunities          
  • Analyse existing systems, design, develop and manage enterprise level information systems
  • Apply advanced programming techniques, software patterns in the development of enterprise level systems
  • Design, implement and manage computer networks
  • Setup and administer network and server systems
  • Apply scientific research principles in researching solutions to existing and new problems
  • Apply mathematical concepts in business problems solving
  • Communicate effectively in presenting technical ideas, writing business plans and proposals

Course Modules

Semester One Year One

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Entry Requirements

Admission Requirements

Admission into the first year is through any of the following avenues:

  • Direct entry;
  • Diploma Holders Scheme;
  • Degree Holders Scheme;
  • Professional Qualifications
  • Mature Age Scheme.

a. Direct entry

A candidate must have:

    1. Sat U.C.E. examination (or equivalent), and passed Mathematics with at least a credit and obtained a Certificate with at least 5 passes or its equivalent;
    2. Or passed subsidiary Mathematics at A-level.
    3. Obtained at least two principal level passes at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (U.C.A.E.) obtained at the same sitting.

The Weighting System is as follows:

  • Essential Two best done of All A’ level Subjects
  • Relevant Third best done of All A’ level Subjects
  • Desirable General Paper, Computer Studies, Sub- Maths

b. Diploma Holders scheme

A candidate must hold at least a second-class diploma in any discipline from a recognized institution.

Admission to year two (if applicable)

  • Candidates who completed their diploma programs with at least second class lower division from Makerere University Business School within the three years back period at the same time of application shall be admitted to the second year of study and shall not be required to take any course in the first year of study.
  • Applicants who possess a pass diploma in the relevant field shall be admitted to the first year of study.

c. Degree Holders Scheme

Applicants to the school undergraduate programs holding other degrees of recognized Institutions shall be considered on a case-by-case basis after verifying their course coverage.

d. Professional Qualification

Candidates who completed level Two of relevant professional course will also be eligible: The following professional qualification will be considered: OCP, MSCE

e. Mature Age scheme

Passed mature age entrance examinations administered by Makerere University.

f. Admission through transfer of credits

Admission other than to the first year of program shall require a special resolution of the Faculty Board and permission of the Senate.  The Departments will work out all the appropriate Credit transfers, which shall not exceed 60% of the minimum graduation load of the program.
