Higher Education Certificate in Business Studies

The Higher Education Certificate Programme is intended to be an intensive programme for students who have successfully completed the Uganda Advance Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent but who may have not attained sufficient grades to enroll for Diplomas or Degree programmes. The programme is also intended for students from countries whose secondary school qualifications are not considered equivalent to UACE but permit admission into Higher Education in those countries. The programme shall be carefully designed to provide study and learning support skills for further higher education. The Knowledge shall emphasize general principles and application.

Career Path

At the end of the HECBS programme, graduates will:

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge and skills in the structure and operations of a business.
  • Demonstrate an ability to present, evaluate and interpret information on business documents such as quotations, invoices, books of accounts, etc.
  • Evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to taking business decisions.
  • Communicate the results of their study/work accurately and reliably, and with structured and coherent arguments to various business stakeholders.
  • Apply their knowledge and skills on ICT applications in business, marketing, entrepreneurship among others;
  • Undertake further training on any business degree programme.
  • Work with others to achieve defined objectives in a business work environment as well as taking up leadership roles in a work group work.

Course Modules

Entry Requirements

  • Uganda Certificate of Education or its equivalent and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education with at least two subsidiary passes obtained in principal subjects or its equivalent. For avoidance of doubt, a holder of UACE with only one principal pass shall be deemed to meet admission requirements.
  • Vocational Qualifications at level 2 or level 3 of the Uganda Vocational Qualifications Framework.
  • Qualifications equivalent to Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) as shall be determined by the National Council in consultation with the Uganda National Examinations Board.
  • An Ordinary Certificate from an institution recognized by NCHE.
  • Student whose foreign secondary school qualifications are not considered equivalent to UACE but permit admission into Higher Education in the foreign country. Such students shall have passed at least five subjects with at least a credit in each of the five subjects. In addition, foreign students whose studies were not conducted in English shall show proof of proficiency in the English Language. The English proficiency centers shall be accredited by NCHE.

Tuition Structure
