The Department of Education emerged from the Faculty of Vocational Distance Education in Makerere University Business School. The department focuses on provision of inclusive teacher education through development of academic and executive educational management programmes. The department addresses education and management policy issues of professional teachers at university, institutions of higher learning, secondary and primary school levels in terms of content, knowledge, delivery methods, pedagogical and anagogical skills, narrowing policy gaps through training, teaching and research innovations. As educators, we are committed to preparing the current generation of 21st-century learners with the scientific and non-scientific teaching strategies and learning tools to solve societal problems in diversity of context. The department prepares teacher trainees to make a difference in teacher education profession, educational management and policy implementation.
The department champions teacher education through various academic programmes such as; Higher Education Certificate in Business Studies, Post Graduate Diploma in Business Education, Post Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship Education (Secondary Teacher Education), Post graduate Diploma in Nursery Teacher Education and Master of Philosophy to mention but few. It spearheads and coordinates training of trainers of academic staff, institutes teaching and research mentoring programmes for all academic staff in the University. The department is a teaching and research-driven department where research innovations and effective teaching are mutually reinforced to build capacity of competent university teachers or professors and international scholars especially from position of Teaching Assistants to position of Professors in terms of the content, knowledge, skills, inclusive pedagogical/andragogical strategies, research innovations and deriving evidence-based policies. This is attained through continuous training of trainers and mentoring programmes using both traditional and on-line delivery methods to ensure successful attainment of academic career growth and international scholarship
Message from the HOD Mission
The Department of Education emerged from the Faculty of Vocational Distance Education in Makerere University Business School. The department is service oriented unit that handles teacher trainees in the field of vocational, distance and business education programmes. The focus of the department is majorly: provision of training of trainers in terms of curriculum design, active and innovating teaching, setting examination, assessment and evaluation); mentoring of university academic staff in terms of their core roles and career path right from the position of teaching assistant to professorship in terms of teaching, scholarship, research and community engagement from a teacher education perspective, offering of academic, management education executive programmes at certificate, diploma and masters levels.
As educators, researchers, consultants, and policymakers, we are dedicated to empowering university trainers and student teachers in pre-primary, primary, secondary, and higher institutions of learning with professional knowledge, skills, and values. Our department excels in fostering educational excellence, promoting inclusive and impactful education, and creating innovative, active learning environments that embrace competency-based curricula. Through mentorship, training, and research, we develop patriotic and competitive trained teachers with employable competencies from a global perspective. We achieve this by collectively utilizing active teaching methods, holistic approaches of pedagogy, andragogy and heutagogy, innovative digital tools, and blended delivery methods to meet diverse learning needs in a world-wide context.
